31st Annual Festival of Books For Young People

The annual festival of books for young people will be held Saturday October 30 at the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City. The theme is "Reading for the fun of it" and we have chosen three authors who strive to making reading fun: Tim Egan offers his readers quirky characters and zany events that are bound to bring smiles to the faces of his readers. Whether they are diners at the elephant's café or city-dwelling cows, Tim Egan's characters will amuse, entertain and pass along a timely lesson or two about life. His trademark wit makes Egan a welcome arrival on the picture book scene. The Blunder of the Rougues--a tale of a heist gone awry- is his newest; earlier titles include Metropolitan Cow and Friday Night at Hodges' Café. Carol Lynch Williams writes novels of intense feelings that have an authentic ring to them. She entertains with humor and likable characters whose lives are often not all they would hope them to be, but who succeed in meeting the challenges they face. Elyse contends with her Grandmother's advancing Alzheimer's disease, while Caitlynne and Cara struggle with an abusive mother, and Angelica strives to write the great romance novel. Each character is up to the challenges life presents and Williams brings each story to a satisfying conclusion. My Angelica and the True Colors of Caitlynne Jackson are among her recent titles.

Todd Strasser has written nearly 100 books for young readers, often developing series that have captured the attention of reluctant readers. His series include: Help! I'm Trapped Against the Odds and Camp Run-A-Muck. Besides his series writing, Strasser has written entertaining and often comical novels like Hey, Dad, Get a Life! And How I Created My Perfect Prom Date. Strasser's work aims to encourage young people to readSfor the fun of it.

In addition, there will be book talk sessions by Carol Elbert, Ames Public Library; Jean Donham, UI School of Library & Information Science; and Joel Shoemaker, Iowa City Community Schools.

Registration brochures will be sent to all who have attended the Festival in recent years. If you have not been to a Festival and would like registration materials, contact:
