For Materials Selection Committe Training

Ronnie Podolesfsky, Attorney (319) 236-7204

Ronnie's major areas of interest are Constitutional-employment discrimination, civil rights, and educational law. A recent project involved the impact of religious right groups' impact on the collections of about 60 public libraries in Iowa. She and others went to the libraries to see how many of the books on religious right "hit lists" were in the collections of public Iowa libraries. Ronnie also serves on the national board of the National Organization for Women.

Her fee is $100 per hour but is negotiable depending upon the type of group she is addressing and on how much funding is available. Mileage is a must.

 

William Buss, University of Iowa College of Law (319) 355-9034

Prof. Buss teaches educational and constitutional law and has a great interest in freedom of speech issues. He is very interested in speaking to groups and selection review committees; however, during the remainder of the 1998-99 academic year, he will be overseas.

Keep him in mind for the 1999-2000 school year. Please schedule him 2 months in advance. He requests mileage and/or hotel/meals reimbursement.

 

Samuel Massey, Head of Staff at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Des Moines (515) 274-1534

Rev. Dr. Massey has been active in and written about First Amendment issues including editorials in the Des Moines Register.

Please try to schedule Rev. Dr. Massey as far in advance as possible. His fee is negotiable.

 

Kathy Lee Collins, Director of Legal Services for School Administrators of Iowa (515) 224-3370

Before attending Drake University Law School, Kathy was a high school English/speech/drama teacher. She has also taught school law at Drake's law school and is the writer or editor of a number of publications including The Iowa School Administrators Legal Guide.

Her fee is $100 plus mileage.

Mary charges no fee for member school districts. She'd like to have 2-3 weeks advance notice for any speaking engagements.

 

Kathy Geronzin, Media Specialist, Northeast Comm. Schools in Goose Lake (319) 577-2249

Kathy is a veteran of the IEMA Intellectual Freedom Committee. She is willing to speak on topics related to Intellectual Freedom, selection policy development, and child safety on the Internet. She recently developed a Powerpoint presentation that focuses on the Internet and child safety.

Her fee is $100 and mileage.

Denise was recently appointed to the Intellectual Freedom Committee of YALSA. She has developed a booktalk of nonfiction print materials that discuss Intellectual Freedom. The topics of the books range from hate speech to dress codes to book challenges.

Her fee is negotiable but she does request mileage.

Marilyn has a broad background in education having taught at every level (elementary, middle, and high school). She also served as a media specialist for 5 years. Marilyn will speak on any aspect of Intellectual Freedom, but she has a particular interest in censoring of the Internet.

Her fee is mileage plus hotel/meal expenses.
